It's patently obvious that he knows how to wield realism as a tool, and I would sooner believe he has unexamined sexist assumptions about the world which lead him to feel that having a young female character perform the feats in this game is so unrealistic as to break immersion than believe he brought up an unprompted point in an interview explicitly to lie about it.

I think that's an important point that you haven't quite addressed here; even if you intend to use realism appropriately as a tool, it's a gut feeling kind of process. This means that prejudices that you may not be aware of have a lot of room to influence your decisions.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03098683522262333025noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3493946997489326661.post-46403095298409829802013-06-18T21:00:25.120-04:002013-06-18T21:00:25.120-04:00You don't even need extreme examples like that...You don't even need extreme examples like that YouTube video.

gaBlahYa says "I have a son that climbs things". The stark difference is the bikini girl has the choice to wear that or pretty much whatever the hell she wants. The woman wearing the burqua does NOT have a choice.Domariushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12767404092905982404noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3493946997489326661.post-87038830757537080892012-04-01T08:51:02.005-04:002012-04-01T08:51:02.005-04:00Yes, because only little boys climb things, little...Yes, because only little boys climb things, little girls never climb anything at all...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YixG7b0g6BE#t=01m02s

Sarcasm aside, climbing is universal, and at that age there's really no difference in physical ability for climbing. Kids have such a high muscle-to-mass ratio that the more important element is technique, not brute strength. That girl in the video above is already climbing V12 routes, which for most adults would take years and years of training to do.Ianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16341600555832236742noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3493946997489326661.post-51377475062326624102012-03-30T13:30:43.036-04:002012-03-30T13:30:43.036-04:00It's a scenario wherein, even if it was true i...It's a scenario wherein, even if it was true in real life, that wouldn't be a good enough reason. This is often expressed as telling young girls they're too weak to do something they are entirely physically capable of*. Adults allow little boys to express their desire to climb; little boys climbing things probably seems 'more realistic' because real life is super sexist.

Ueda argued that climbing things or wearing something other than a skirt is 'unladylike' for a little girl to do, which is super sexist. In reality there is nothing physically true about girls that prevents them from climbing things, or from wearing shorts.

* If you prevent someone from exercising their muscles because you're convinced they are too weak, then chances are they'll turn out to be weaker than the boys who are allowed to do that sort of thing! Funny how it's self-fulfilling!miaouhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15728534436636296086noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3493946997489326661.post-88994604717324359632012-03-29T00:28:39.141-04:002012-03-29T00:28:39.141-04:00Then he would have said that. My 3 year old nephew climbs trees, standing piano's and car roofs, it is something little boys have a habit of doing and I can accept Udea's explanation in choosing a male lead because it's far more congruent of that character.gaBlahYahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04200506955625258317noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3493946997489326661.post-962437101211411432012-03-25T20:59:26.814-04:002012-03-25T20:59:26.814-04:00Your opinion re: Project Representation was based ...Your opinion re: Project Representation was based on reality.
